Commission AmeriCorps State Fixed Amount Grants FY 2012
Educational failure has been an intractable challenge for policy-makers for decades. Despite years of reform, racial and income gaps leave students of color and low-income students far behind their peers in educational achievement. These inequalities start with school readiness and continue through higher education. Partnerships for Student Achievement (PSA), hosted by the Forest Grove School District (FGSD), addresses the challenges these students face through individual/small group tutoring. Twenty full-time AmeriCorps members will tutor identified below-grade level students individually or in small groups in literacy or math for 11 months starting in August 2012 in twenty K-12, public schools throughout Washington County, Oregon which is just west of Portland. At the end of the school year, 90% of tutored students will demonstrate an increase in academic performance either through skillbased pre- and post-tests (elementary students) or via classroom teacher assessments (middle and high school students). This project will focus on the CNCS focus area of education. The CNCS investment of $240,000 will be matched with $287,569.
