School Turnaround Middle School Transitions
Three AmeriCorps Members (Members) will leverage an additional 30 volunteers to support academic achievement, enrichments, and successful transitions from elementary school to middle school and from middle school to high school in three high-poverty middle schools in South King County, Washington State. Successful transitions at these two points are strong indicators of high school graduation and the pursuit of post-secondary training and education. Members will participate in the review and selection of appropriate transition models and curriculum based on their evolving understanding of the needs of the communities served by Community Schools Collaboration (CSC). At the end of the one-year period, Members will have contributed to a bank of curriculum that has been reviewed and can be piloted in small groups of youth to determine the most effective approaches within the multicultural communities served. The project aligns with the CNCS focus area of establishing a school culture and environment that improve school safety, attendance and discipline and address other non-academic factors that impact student achievement, such as students' social, emotional and health needs.
