AmeriCorps Turnaround Schools
The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) Public School System (PSS) AmeriCorps program will place sixty (60) reduced half-time student members in nine (09) elementary schools across the three (03) major islands in the CNMI to provide cross-age peer tutoring and mentoring to at-risk students performing at the bottom quartile in standardized tests in reading. The expected outcome is to improve reading scores for 240 elementary student beneficiaries in Kindergarten through third (3rd) grade by 0.5 or more grade levels which in turn will assist turnaround schools to better meet PSS learning goals that 53% of students will be proficient in reading at or above grade level by 2014. The program period will begin on September 01, 2013 through August 31, 2014. This project will focus on the Corporation for National Community Service (CNCS) focus area of Education and will support expansion and better coordination of the existing AmeriCorps program in each partner school. The CNCS investment of $363,491 (80%) will be matched with $89,134 (20%) for a total program budget of $452,625.
