Each year the Corporation for National and Community Service recognizes innovative programs and outstanding volunteers with its Service Impact Awards.

This year, the 2011 Service Impact awardees exemplify important achievements in the six focus areas as outlined by the 2011-2015 Strategic Plan – Education, Disaster Services, Healthy Futures, Economic Opportunity, Environmental Stewardship and Veterans & Military Families.

Service Impact awardees are helping to address critical issues in their communities -- and our nation -- through solution-driven service. They are the every day heroes and successful programs that improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster increased civic engagement through service and volunteering.

This year, nominations were received through Challenge.Gov and response was tremendous. The stories shared featured volunteers from diverse backgrounds and creative program models making an impact in a wide variety of ways. We received so many great stories in fact, that that we’ll continue featuring many of the nominations here on the National Service blog throughout the summer.

The winners of the 2011 Service Impact Awards were honored at the closing session today at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service.
