Commission AmeriCorps State Fixed Amount Grants FY 2014

Executive Summary

Arlington Works! AmeriCorps is a partnership between an adult English program, the Arlington Education and Employment Program (REEP)/Arlington Public Schools, and Edu-Futuro, a non-profit that works with Hispanic children and youth. Arlington Works! (AW) will build on its current partnership model to recruit 8 full-time AmeriCorps members to enhance and expand services that will help low-income immigrants develop skills needed for economic and academic success. Members will provide instruction in English, Spanish, technology, job, and college preparation at 8 schools and community centers in Arlington and Fairfax counties in Virginia. At least 635 participants (500 adults and 135 children) will enroll annually in instruction provided by AmeriCorps members. Of adult participants, at least 70% (350) will complete their course of instruction. At least 50% of all participants (250 adults and 68 children) will demonstrate increased skills and knowledge in course specific subject matter. Members will also participate in National Service Days and leverage 232 volunteers to assist with AmeriCorps services.

AW will address the CNCS focus areas of Economic Opportunity and Education through a fixed amount grant with a CNCS investment of $104,000 to partially cover stipends for 8 full-time members. Member costs not supported by CNSC will be covered by participant fees (portion of the stipends, FICA, member gear, health care, workers' compensation, supplies, and travel). Existing local grants will cover staff salaries and benefits to manage the project, support and supervise members, and ensure compliance with all grant requirements.
