This week, three outstanding Senior Corps volunteers from California and Iowa Foster Grandparent Programs were featured on the nationally syndicated “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” The segment, which can be viewed here, included interviews with Senior Corps volunteers from the Fort Dodge Foster Grandparent Program in Iowa and Pepperdine University’s Foster Grandparent Program in Los Angeles.

Today, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency for service and volunteering, announced the opening of its new Mountain Region office in Denver. CNCS CEO Barbara Stewart and new regional administrator Ken Goodson made the announcement at an event celebrating the 25th Anniversary of AmeriCorps during which nearly 300 new AmeriCorps members kicked off their year of service by taking the AmeriCorps pledge.

On Wednesday, Americans across the country will volunteer in communities large and small to commemorate the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance. 9/11 Day was started in 2002 by the nonprofit group MyGoodDeed with widespread support of September 11th families to create a permanent and positive way to observe 9/11 each year and ultimately turn a day of tragedy into a day of doing good.

More Americans than ever are volunteering, according to a new federal study released today by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that oversees AmeriCorps and Senior Corps.The 2018 Volunteering in America report found that 77.34 million adults (30.3 percent) volunteered through an organization last year. Altogether, Americans volunteered nearly 6.9 billion hours, worth an estimated $167 billion in economic value, based on the Independent Sector’s estimate of the average value of a volunteer hour for 2017. Millions more are supporting friends and family (43.1 percent) and doing favors for their neighbors (51.4 percent), suggesting that many are engaged in acts of “informal volunteering.”

Forest Grove Public School in Garvin, Okla. has been awarded a new opioid-focused AmeriCorps VISTA project valued at nearly $9 million by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that oversees AmeriCorps. A three-year grant, this funding will support nearly 700 AmeriCorps members in total. The grant was announced by Congressman Markwayne Mullin at a community event in Garvin, Okla.

One year after Hurricane Maria made landfall, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that administers AmeriCorps and leads the nation’s volunteer efforts, remains committed to the long-term recovery of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. AmeriCorps Disaster Response Teams, including FEMA Corps, remain on the islands even today and additional teams will deploy in the coming weeks. To mark the anniversary, the agency has released new photos and videos about the ongoing recovery efforts on the island.
