The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) has deployed nearly 550 AmeriCorps members, including FEMA Corps, from across the nation to support recovery efforts in Texas. AmeriCorps members are working with the American Red Cross, supporting shelter and mass care operations, as well as providing assistance to FEMA’s logistics and disaster survivor assistance teams.

As Hurricane Harvey heads toward Texas, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that oversees AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and the nation’s volunteering initiatives, has placed more than 700 members of the AmeriCorps Disaster Response Team (A-DRTs), including FEMA Corps, on standby to deploy at the request of the state and local managers. These teams provide expert manpower for everything from coordinating volunteers to donations management, sandbagging to shelter operations, and debris removal to home repairs.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) today announced more than $5.3 million in Senior Corps RSVP funding to support senior volunteer service in 50 new communities across the country. These grants awarded to nonprofits and community agencies will expand RSVP’s presence in areas previously unserved by Senior Corps RSVP programs.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) announces that they will begin recruitment for up to 50 AmeriCorps VISTA members, to support the expansion of FIRST STEM education programs into 33 U.S. communities. The 50 AmeriCorps VISTA members, from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that administers AmeriCorps, will be placed at sites across the country, providing a service valued at more than $1.4 million in support to FIRST in 2017.

Since the program’s inception in 2009, CNCS has generated $1 billion in investments for evidence-based community solutions in 46 states and Washington, D.C.  Private and local funders have nearly tripled the federal investment, providing $672 million to expand programs that work.

This funding, awarded to 10 local organizations, will support more than 350 Foster Grandparent volunteers.

Nearly 100 AmeriCorps members have been dispatched to the region since CNCS announced its first resources on the ground in early December.

In total, more than three dozen AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members are actively responding, with additional deployments pending and all AmeriCorps Disaster Response Teams on standby.
